Veterans: Hearing Aids & Tinnitus Care

Proudly Serving Those Who Served

Did you know? Many veterans qualify for free hearing aids and tinnitus care through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). If you’ve served in the military and notice hearing loss or ringing in your ears, you may be eligible for comprehensive hearing services at no cost.

Why Veterans Commonly Experience Hearing Issues

  • Repeated exposure to weapons fire, aircraft, or machinery noise

  • Blast exposure or combat injuries

  • Prolonged loud environments without adequate hearing protection

Hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing, buzzing, or humming in the ears) are two of the most common service-connected disabilities recognized by the VA. The good news is that effective treatment and hearing aids are widely available — and often covered entirely by the VA.

VA Hearing Aid & Tinnitus Coverage Overview

Who Qualifies

The VA provides hearing aids at no cost for eligible veterans who:

  • Are enrolled in VA health care, and
  • Have a hearing loss or tinnitus diagnosis that impacts daily life, communication, or job performance

Veterans may also qualify if they:

  • Have a service-connected disability
  • Receive compensation or pension from the VA
  • Are former prisoners of war, Purple Heart recipients, or housebound
  • Have functional hearing needs (for employment, communication, or safety)

Tip: Even if your hearing loss isn’t officially service-connected, you may still qualify if you’re enrolled in VA health care and your audiologist determines you need hearing aids.

What the VA Covers

  • Comprehensive hearing exams and diagnostic testing
  • Hearing aid fitting, adjustment, and follow-up appointments
  • Batteries, repairs, and replacements as needed
  • Tinnitus evaluation and sound therapy options
  • Counseling and ongoing hearing health support

The VA partners with top hearing aid manufacturers, including ReSound, Phonak, Starkey, and Oticon — the same premium technology we fit at Family First Hearing Center.

Accessing Your VA Hearing Benefits

If you aren’t enrolled, visit www.va.gov/health-care/apply or call 877-222-8387 for help completing your application.

Once enrolled, you can:

  • Schedule an audiology appointment at your nearest VA Medical Center, Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC), or
  • Ask for a Community Care referral (to see a local provider, like Family First Hearing Center)

After your evaluation, you’ll receive custom-fit hearing aids and follow-up visits to ensure comfort and performance.

Tinnitus Treatment for Veterans

Tinnitus is one of the most common service-connected disabilities recognized by the VA. While there’s no single cure, effective management options are available:

  • Hearing aids with tinnitus masking features
  • Sound therapy programs
  • Counseling and stress-management strategies
  • Sleep and relaxation techniques

Our specialists at Family First Hearing Center can guide you through tinnitus relief strategies — whether through VA benefits or direct care options.
