Active Duty Hearing Aid & Tinnitus Benefits

Did you know active duty service members (and in some cases their families) may be eligible for no-cost hearing aids?

At Family First Hearing Center, we’re committed to helping military personnel and their families navigate their hearing health and insurance benefits. Below is a clear guide on how active duty hearing aid coverage works (including tinnitus). If you have questions or want help verifying your benefits, we’re here to assist.

Why This Matters: Hearing Loss & Tinnitus in the Military

  • Exposure to loud environments, weapons fire, aircraft, and machinery makes hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing in the ears) among the most common service-related health issues for military members.
  • Many service members do not realize they may qualify for hearing aids or related services at little to no cost under military health benefits.
  • Proper diagnosis and timely treatment can improve the quality of life, communication, and effectiveness in both duty and civilian life.

What TRICARE / Military Benefits Cover

Active duty service members and eligible family members can receive hearing screenings and diagnostic audiology services under TRICARE. https://tricare.mil/CoveredServices/IsItCovered/HearingExams?utm_source=chatgpt.com

TRICARE covers one hearing screening per calendar year for active duty family members.

Audiology services (evaluation, selection, fitting, follow-up) are covered when medically necessary for qualifying hearing conditions. https://tricare.mil/CoveredServices/IsItCovered/Otorhinolaryngology?utm_source=chatgpt.com

Active duty members (and in specific cases, their dependents) may have hearing aids and related services covered if certain criteria are met:

The hearing loss must meet defined thresholds:

  • Adults: threshold of ≥ 40 dB HL in one or both ears at 500, 1,000,

1,500, 2,000, 3,000, or 4,000 Hz

  • Or ≥ 26 dB HL in one or both ears at three or more of those frequencies
  • Or speech recognition score < 94%

Dependents (spouse or child) of active duty service members can qualify if they meet “profound hearing loss” criteria.

Benefits include hearing aid fitting, adjustments, repairs, and replacement when needed (due to wear, damage, or changes in hearing) under certain conditions.

TRICARE’s official policy states that hearing aids and related services are only covered for active duty service members and family members whose hearing loss meets those specific criteria.

As of December 22, 2023, eligible children of military retirees (who are enrolled in TRICARE Prime or US Family Health Plan) can receive hearing aids and services if they meet the qualifying hearing-loss criteria.

However, TRICARE does not cover hearing aids for retirees or their families (except for the above child exception).

Tinnitus & Its Relation to Hearing Aid Benefits

Tinnitus is often linked with hearing loss, especially from noise exposure. Many veterans and active duty personnel with tinnitus also qualify for hearing assessment and treatment via VA or military health benefits.

While TRICARE doesn’t directly cover “tinnitus devices,” hearing aids with tinnitus masking or relief features may be part of the devices covered if hearing aid eligibility is met.

For veterans (after service), the VA is a primary route for tinnitus and hearing loss claims and benefits.

How to Navigate the Process & Get Help. Here’s how we can support you:

Contact TRICARE or review your benefits to see whether your hearing loss meets the established thresholds.

We can help you gather prior audiograms and medical documentation.

Some TRICARE plans require a referral from your Primary Care Manager (PCM).

In many cases, authorization or prior approval might be needed before scheduling a plan-covered provider visit.

Work with audiologists or hearing providers in the TRICARE network or military facility.

We can coordinate with your insurance to ensure services are covered where possible.

Once eligible, you receive a hearing aid device, fitting, adjustments, and follow-up care.

Repairs or replacements (if necessary) are covered under defined conditions.

If a claim is denied, we can help you navigate appeals or discuss alternate funding routes (e.g. VA).
